ATWASI: A Tribute to the Matriarchal Heritage of Hospitality

How the Love and Lessons of Jamaican Grandmothers Inspired a Travel Legacy

As we celebrate International Women's Day, I find myself reflecting on the incredible women who paved the way for me. ATWASI, the embodiment of my passion for travel & hospitality, is a tribute to the love and wisdom passed down from my mother and maternal grandmother. Their nurturing spirit ignited my childhood curiosity, transporting me to places that had only existed in the pages of history books – places like London, Paris, and Rome.

My foundation was fortified with annual pilgrimages to Morant Bay, where I would reunite with my paternal grandmother & her parents Mama and Papa Mowatt. Awakening to the sounds of a crowing cock, the aromas of ackee and saltfish, callaloo, and fried dumplings enveloped me – A testament to the stealthy movements of these women who prepared these delights with unwavering love in the early morning darkness. Through quiet observation, I absorbed the secrets of Sweet Potato pudding recipes & what it means to welcome someone into your home, each dish a chapter in the book of tradition.

The journey continued with road trips through Fern Gully, leading to the pristine white sands and turquoise waters of Ocho Rios. These expeditions not only connected me to my Jamaican heritage but also fostered my love for the outdoors and the beauty of this island.

The personal journey that birthed ATWASI instilled a perspective on travel that transcends the typical touristy attractions.

Our experiences are curated to provide an authentic "inner circle" view into the rich cultural fabric of Jamaica - the real warmth, hospitality and human connections that exist beyond the resort gates.

ATWASI aims to be an ambassador for the true spirit of Jamaica, sharing traditions lovingly passed down by remarkably resilient female elders over generations. More than just traversing scenic landscapes, our itineraries immerse travelers into the heritage and customs still preserved within local communities today.

This matriarchal influence has inspired ATWASI's mission to champion and elevate local entrepreneurship, artisans and the perpetuation of cultural legacies.

Our experiences connect travelers to local women-led businesses, from touring batik studios and galleries to savoring home-cooked meals from chefs preserving historic recipes.

Through cuisine, craft and firsthand storytelling, we aim to honor Jamaica's enduring matrilineal heritage.

This loving community of women imprinted their unique interpretation of hospitality, a legacy I am immensely grateful to share with you. ATWASI is more than a travel concierge; it's a manifestation of the lessons, flavors, and warmth passed down through generations of remarkable women. May we continue to celebrate and honor the strength, resilience, and grace of the women who came before us.

Wishing you a day filled with inspiration and empowerment.
